_New in GeoExpress 8_
Version 8 introduces several new features to GeoExpress, described
below. For historical details about features added in recent versions
of GeoExpress, see "GeoExpress Feature History".
_- Support for MrSID Generation 4 (MG4)_
GeoExpress 8 introduces compression of raster imagery to MG4, the
latest version of the MrSID image compression format. MG4 files can be
viewed in either of LizardTech's free viewers, GeoViewer and
ExpressView Browser Plug-in.
_- Alpha Channel Support_
GeoExpress 8 uses the alpha masking capabilities in MG4 to enable
you to specify which areas of your imagery you want to be transparent
(nodata areas) and opaque, then creates an alpha mask and stores it in
an alpha band or alpha channel. The alpha band is preserved losslessly
even when you are encoding lossily, so that your imagery is always
free of the speckling artifacts that can appear after compressing
_- Multispectral and Hyperspectral Support_
GeoExpress 8 supports multispectral and hyperspectral images,
enabling you to compress up to 255 bands. Whether you need to compress
4-band color images containing an infrared channel, take advantage of
the latest 8-band satellite imagery, or compress high-resolution RGB
datasets, GeoExpress has you covered.
_- Improved Mosaicking Options_
GeoExpress 8 also introduces improved mosaicking options.
Previously, mosaics were either quick to create but slower for end
users to open, or took a long time to create but opened rapidly in
viewing applications. Now you can combine thousands of MrSID files
without spending valuable time reprocessing them. MG4 mosaics open as
quickly as a single image, so you save time creating images and your
users save time viewing them.
_- Compatibility with Previous Versions_
GeoExpress 8 is backwards compatible with output from previous
versions. GeoExpress can read files of all previous versions of the
MrSID format and encode to both MrSID Generation 2 (MG2) and MrSID
Generation 3 (MG3) files. The ExpressView Browser Plug-in can view all
previous versions of the MrSID file format. The ExpressView Browser
Plug-in ships on the GeoExpress CD and is also available as a free
Almost all third-party applications from vendors such as ESRI,
Autodesk, Intergraph, Leica, etc. support MG3 files and support for
MG4 in third-party applications is underway. For more information on
support for MrSID image formats, contact your third-party software
